Everything inside me stopped.

“Two identical bracelets.”

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

“Did he say who the second one was for?”

Her smile faded. “No, ma’am. I’m sorry.”

Suddenly the bracelet did not feel beautiful. It felt like evidence.

I put it back in the velvet box and walked out before she could say anything else.
