“You must be Olivia,” she said softly.
I nodded.
We sat in her kitchen, two women connected by a grief neither of us had chosen.
I placed the velvet box on the table and slid it toward her.
“Nolan bought this for you.”
Her eyes filled immediately.
“I never wanted to take anything from you.”
I believed her.
That surprised me.
Maybe because there was no victory in her face. No secret pride. No stolen romance. Only exhaustion, kindness, and the quiet sorrow of someone nearing the end of her own road.
I shook my head.
“You didn’t take anything from me.”
Then I reached across the table and touched her hand.
“You gave something back.”
She began to cry.
So did I.
And there, in a stranger’s kitchen, Emily’s name returned to the world.
Not as a wound we avoided.
