Ten years earlier, grief had entered our home and quietly rearranged everything.
Our daughter’s name slowly disappeared from our conversations. Her photograph, once standing proudly in the hallway, ended up inside a drawer after Nolan turned it face down one winter morning and never turned it back.
I noticed.
I said nothing.
That was what we became good at. Not healing. Not remembering. Not speaking. Just surviving in the same rooms without touching the wound directly.
Lately, though, Nolan had seemed different. He took phone calls outside. He spent long stretches on the back porch after dinner. Sometimes I found him staring at Emily’s picture with cold coffee beside him.
“Are you okay?” I asked one morning.
“Just tired, Liv.”
I accepted the answer because exhaustion had become normal in our marriage.
