Chapter 5: The Phone Call
Jessica called my brother with shaking hands and put him on speaker.
Maybe she thought his voice would save her.
It did the opposite.
“Daniel?” Mark said. “What’s going on?”
I looked at Jessica.
“Tell him.”
She wiped her face quickly.
“Your brother showed up acting insane. He’s trying to throw me and Mom out.”
There it was.
The first draft of the lie.
The victim costume.
The tears arranged neatly around the accusation.
I took the phone from her hand.
“Mark,” I said, “Dad was sweeping the driveway in the heat while Mom washed clothes outside. Jessica and Susan were sitting on the porch ordering them around.”
Silence.
Then he said, “What?”
“They threatened Mom and Dad with being put in a home if they complained. The money I sent for medicine did not go where it was supposed to go. I have records.”
Jessica lunged for the phone.
I stepped back.
Mark’s voice changed.
“Jessica?”
She froze.
“Is that true?”
Nobody spoke.
And in that silence, everyone heard the answer.
