I worked 80-hour weeks in a freezing apartment to buy my parents their dream farmhouse in cash. Chapter 4: Three Minutes

I turned back to Jessica and Susan.

“Pack your things.”

Jessica stared at me.

“What?”

“Your purses. Your phones. Whatever belongs to you personally. You have three minutes.”

Susan laughed, but it shook at the edges.

“You can’t throw us out. We live here.”

I held up the deed.

“No. My parents live here.”

Jessica’s eyes filled with tears.

But they were not tears of regret.

They were tears of someone losing access to something she thought she controlled.

“Daniel, please,” she said. “We’re family.”

I looked at my mother’s wet sleeves.

I looked at my father’s bent shoulders.

Then I looked back at Jessica.

“Family does not turn old people into servants.”

Susan pointed a shaking finger at me.

“Your brother will hear about this.”

“Good,” I said. “Call him.”

Jessica froze.

That told me everything I needed to know.

My brother had no idea.

Or worse.

He knew only the version Jessica had been feeding him.
