Chapter 3: My Father Finally Spoke
My father sat down slowly on the porch step.
Not because anyone told him to.
Because his legs looked like they could no longer carry the weight of the truth.
“Dad,” I said quietly, “tell me what happened.”
He shook his head.
Jessica snapped, “Arthur, don’t start.”
That was the wrong sentence.
I turned toward her so fast she stepped back.
“Do not speak to my father like that again.”
The yard went silent.
My mother began crying softly.
My father rubbed his forehead with one trembling hand.
“They said we were becoming a burden,” he whispered.
Jessica’s mouth tightened.
“That is not what I said.”
My father kept going, voice breaking.
“They said if we complained, they would have us moved somewhere people could ‘manage us better.’”
My mother covered her face.
There it was.
The thing I had felt from the truck but could not prove until now.
They had not just used my parents.
They had frightened them into silence.
Something inside me became very calm.
Dangerously calm.
