The father stood again and turned back to the display case.
“Which one do you like?” he asked gently.
The little girl hesitated.
Then she pointed to a delicate necklace — small and simple, with a tiny star-shaped diamond.
“That one,” she said.
He smiled.
“Good choice.”
The saleswoman stepped forward quickly now, her tone completely different.
“I—I can show you that piece,” she said, almost too eager.
But the father didn’t look at her.
Instead, he glanced toward another employee standing quietly nearby.
“Could you help us?” he asked.
The shift was subtle.
But final.
The second employee nodded and stepped forward, unlocking the case carefully and respectfully.
The first saleswoman stepped back.
Silenced.
Not by anger.
By consequence.
The necklace was placed gently into the little girl’s hands.
She held it like it was something magical.
“Can I really have it?” she whispered.
