The man in the blue suit continued, his voice calm but firm.
“We’ve been trying to reach you. The board meeting was delayed until you arrived.”
A ripple of shock moved through the nearby staff.
The saleswoman’s face drained of color.
The father exhaled slowly and rubbed the back of his neck.
“I told them I’d come after this,” he said quietly.
His voice had not changed.
Still gentle.
Still grounded.
But now, the room heard it differently.
The man in the suit nodded.
“Of course. Take your time.”
Then he stepped aside.
Not ahead.
Not beside.
Behind.
Like someone who knew exactly where respect belonged.
The little girl tugged her father’s sleeve.
“Daddy… what does he mean?”
The father knelt beside her, bringing himself down to her level.
“It just means I work with him,” he said softly.

Unimpressive.
