Chapter 6: Saving Sarah

Melissa arrived at the hospital before dawn with Norma beside her.

My wife wore perfect makeup and a beige coat, looking more annoyed than afraid.

“David,” she said, “this has gotten completely out of hand.”

I stood between her and Sarah’s room.

Chris stood beside me.

Two hospital security officers waited near the nurses’ desk.

“You left her outside,” I said.

Melissa’s face tightened.

“She was being dramatic.”

Norma folded her arms.

“Children need discipline.”

Chris opened the folder.

“The police and child protective services are already on their way.”

Melissa went pale.

For the first time that night, fear entered her eyes.

Not fear for Sarah.

Fear for herself.

Two days later, the emergency hearing granted me temporary full custody. Carolyn’s footage, the hospital report, and Sarah’s statements were enough.
