The drive back to Chicago was a blur of rain-slicked asphalt and white-knuckled rage.

I do not remember checking out of the hotel.

I barely remember throwing my suitcase into the rental car.

All I could see was Sarah sitting alone in our driveway, small and terrified, waiting for someone inside that house to care enough to open the door.

I called my brother, Chris.
