I hung up and dialed Melissa.

Voicemail.

I called again.

Then I called her mother, Norma, because if Melissa was not answering, Norma always knew why.

She picked up on the fifth ring.

“Where is Sarah?” I asked.

Norma did not gasp.

She did not ask if my daughter was alive.

She did not even pretend to be afraid.

Her voice was chillingly detached.

“That child is no longer our problem.”

For one second, I stopped breathing.

“What did you just say?”

Norma sighed like I was inconveniencing her.

“Melissa has suffered enough because of that girl. Maybe now you’ll finally understand what she has cost this family.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

And in that moment, I understood the horror had not started tonight.
