Chapter 1: The Ring in His Palm

The old man stopped breathing for a second.

The ring rested in his palm like something alive. It was no longer jewelry. It felt like a wound reopened after years of pretending the scar had healed.

He knew it instantly.

He had given that ring to her.

To Rosa.

The only woman he had ever truly loved.

The woman his family had erased from his life as if she had never existed.

Across from him, the little girl stood frozen. Her small hands hovered at her sides, unsure whether she had done something wrong.

The security officer’s grip slowly loosened from her shoulder.

Around them, the restaurant fell silent.

No forks moved. No glasses clinked. No one spoke.

The old man stared at the child, his heart pounding against memories he had buried for too long.

Then, with a voice that barely held together, he asked:

“Who is your mother?”
