He saw Rosa in Lila so clearly that it hurt.
The nervous stillness. The soft voice. The courage hidden beneath fear.
He remembered how Rosa used to tuck her hair behind her ear when she was anxious. How she would lower her voice when afraid, yet still refuse to run from the truth.
He closed his eyes for a moment.
âI thought you were gone,â he whispered.
Lila blinked at him.
âMom said you would say that.â
That sentence destroyed the last wall inside him.
His eyes opened again, wet now, and he tightened his hand around the ring.
The same ring he thought belonged to the past.
The same ring that had returned with a child attached to it.
He stood suddenly and turned toward the frozen security officer.
âGet my car,â he said.
No hesitation.
No question.
The officer moved immediately.
