Released in 1966 for the British film Georgy Girl, The Seekers’ cheerful folk-pop classic quickly became one of the decade’s biggest international hits. While the movie helped introduce audiences to its uplifting message, the song soon took on a life of its own, climbing to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. It also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and sold more than a million copies worldwide.
Formed in Melbourne, Australia, The Seekers had already built a loyal following with their warm harmonies and acoustic sound. Unlike the louder rock bands dominating the charts, the quartet—Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger, and Bruce Woodley—offered something refreshingly different. Judith Durham’s pure, expressive voice became the heart of the group, while Tom Springfield’s bright arrangement and Jim Dale’s encouraging lyrics perfectly matched the optimistic spirit of the film.
