Chapter 7: The Night I Never Forgot
Charlotte danced with me.
That may sound simple.
It wasn’t.
She danced with me in the middle of the floor, not hidden at the edge. She introduced me to people. She pulled me back into conversations whenever I started drifting.
She treated the whole night like it was normal.
That was what made it precious.
During one slow song, I asked, “Why me?”
She looked up at me and said, “Because you looked like you needed someone to choose you out loud.”
I never forgot that.
At the end of the night, Uncle Ray drove us back to her house. Under the porch light, Charlotte held my hand and smiled.
“I had a really great night. Thank you.”
I laughed softly.
“I should be thanking you.”
She shook her head.
