Chapter 8: The Biggest Lie
I relaxed my shoulders.
Immediately, hope appeared on Darren’s face.
Maybe too much hope.
“You’re right,” I said quietly.
“I am?”
“If Elsie discovers all of this before hearing your side, she’ll run.”
He nodded eagerly.
“Exactly.”
“So let me talk to her first.”
His expression brightened.
“You’ll help me?”
I smiled.
It was the biggest lie I had told all night.
“I’ll bring her.”
When I returned to the gym, the atmosphere had completely changed.
Students whispered in clusters.
Parents watched nervously.
The principal stood near the entrance with Elsie.
Mason’s parents looked horrified.
Perfect.
Elsie looked devastated.
When she saw me, fresh tears appeared.
