Then Elsie shouted words that seemed to stop time itself.

“You paid him, didn’t you?”

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?”

“You paid Mason to take me to prom because you felt sorry for me!”

Every conversation around us died.

People were staring.

I felt my face go cold.

The word sounded weak even to me.
