Chapter 3: The Promise I Could Not Refuse
I asked Grandma if she would want to dance with Henry one more time if she could.
She looked at me for a long moment, frail beneath the hospital blanket. Then she nodded.
“I dreamed about it my whole life,” she whispered.
Something inside me broke.
I promised her I would do everything I could to find him. That night, after she fell asleep, I sat in the dim hospital hallway with my laptop open.
Henry. Class of 1962. Old school records. Alumni pages. Obituaries.
Most leads went nowhere.
The next morning, I called her old high school and explained that my grandmother was dying, and she wanted to see her first love one more time.
By afternoon, I had three possible addresses, two old phone numbers, and one distant cousin in Ohio.
