My ex-husband left me because I “couldn’t give him a child,” then had the nerve to invite me to his wedding just to humiliate me. “You have to come,” he sneered. “She’s already pregnant. She’s not like you.”

Chapter 6: The Best Man Could Not Hide

Richard turned slowly. “Daniel?”

Daniel’s face was white. “I told her this would come out.”

The words landed harder than any scream.

Vanessa’s father stepped forward. “Is he the father?”

Vanessa began crying, but they were not innocent tears. They were trapped tears.

“Richard was stable,” she whispered. “He had the right image. Daniel panicked. We didn’t know what to do.”

Richard looked at her stomach, then at Daniel, then at the crowd that had gathered to celebrate his restored legacy.

“You told me this baby was mine.”

Vanessa snapped, “You told me your ex-wife was barren.”

The sentence sliced through him.

For one brutal moment, everyone saw the truth clearly. Their love story was not love at all. It was two lies trying to outrun each other.

Then Margaret stood again, trembling with rage.

“This is still Elena’s fault.”

I laughed softly.
