Chapter 5: Vanessa’s Secret Broke Open

Margaret went pale.

Vanessa stepped away from Richard. “You told me she was infertile.”

Richard opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

I looked at the guests who had spent years believing I was the tragedy in his life.

“He knew,” I said. “He knew he was infertile before he left me. He knew before he let people humiliate me. He knew before he told our friends I had failed him.”

Then the third slide appeared.

A bank transfer.

Vanessa Moore. Payment received from Daniel Pierce.

The garden fell completely silent.

Vanessa’s hand flew to her stomach.

Richard stared at the screen. “What is this?”

I folded my hands. “That is the first payment Daniel Pierce made to Vanessa three weeks after she told him she was pregnant.”

A man near the back stood so fast his chair scraped against the stone.

Daniel Pierce.

Richard’s best man.

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, don’t.”
