I was thirty-two when I met Robert in a grocery store.
He was thirty-seven, gentle-eyed, soft-spoken, and carrying a burden that would have scared most women away.
He had ten children.
Ten.
His wife had died two years earlier, leaving him to raise them alone. I first noticed him struggling with an overloaded cart while a toddler with bright eyes reached her arms toward me.
Robert quickly scooped her up.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “She does that with anyone who smiles at her.”
I laughed. “Then I suppose I’ll keep smiling.”
The toddler’s name was Sophie.
Before long, I was not just in love with Robert. I was in love with all eleven of them.
Some needed patience. Some needed honesty. All of them needed love.
