Over the next two weeks, they grew reckless.

Arrogant people hate being exposed. They hate it so much they start making mistakes just to prove they still have power.

Bianca called every day with a voice sweet as poison.

“You misunderstood our humor.”

“You’re hormonal.”

“A child deserves a united family.”

Then came the paperwork.

One morning, Matteo placed a stack of documents beside my tea.

“Just estate planning forms,” he said. “Since the baby is coming.”

I flipped through the pages.

There it was.

Transfer forms for my shares in the Milan apartment.

The investment account my father had gifted me.

Future custodial rights buried beneath layers of legal fog.

If I signed, Matteo would control almost everything “for the child’s stability.”

I picked up the pen.

His shoulders relaxed.

Then I wrote one sentence across the signature line.
