“Only where legally permitted,” Ruth answered smoothly. “And your written communications were extremely helpful.”

Luca turned gray.

I looked directly at my husband.

“You told them I would sign anything. You were wrong.”

Vittorio lifted one trembling hand.

“For years, you mocked this woman at my table.”

Bianca began to cry instantly.

Beautiful tears.

Practiced tears.

“She trapped us,” Bianca whispered. “She pretended not to understand.”

“No,” I said. “I gave you privacy. You revealed yourselves.”

Matteo stepped closer and lowered his voice.

“Think carefully. You’re carrying my child.”

I did not move.

“That is the only reason I didn’t destroy you sooner.”

His face twisted.
