Chapter 6: The Letters That Never Came
“…and their pathetic mother never figured it out either,” Jean continued. “She still has no idea she spent fifteen years screaming into a void.”
My heartbeat stopped.
Jean sighed as if she were discussing a minor inconvenience.
“I made sure none of those letters ever reached the girls.”
Letters?
My hand flew to my mouth to stop any sound from escaping.
“She just had to make everything difficult,” Jean said. “But it was easy enough convincing her Richard planned to destroy her in court.”
I pressed myself against the hallway wall.
“He mentioned once that she struggled with depression, so I told her he planned to have her committed and take the girls away forever.”
My knees nearly buckled.
“She panicked exactly like I knew she would,” Jean said smugly. “Those fake messages we created worked perfectly.”
Fake messages.
