Chapter 13: Two Towns Away
We drove to Lily’s work first.
She thought somebody had died when she saw our faces.
Then we told her the truth.
At first, she only stared at us, frozen behind the counter in her work uniform. Then Dad handed her one of the letters.
Her hands began to shake before she even opened it.
By the time she finished reading the first paragraph, tears were running down her cheeks.
“She wrote to us?” Lily whispered.
I nodded.
“For fifteen years.”
Lily covered her mouth, the same way I had in Jean’s hallway.
None of us said much after that.
We just got back into the car and followed the address printed on the newest envelope.
The drive felt endless, even though the house was only two towns away.
