She looked beautiful, impatient, and almost grown. That was the part that frightened me most. Children do not become adults slowly in a mother’s heart. They turn eighteen, put on a dress, and suddenly expect you to trust the world with them.
“Stay together tonight,” I told them.
Liam smiled. “We always do, Mom.”
Livia rolled her eyes. “We’re eighteen, not eight.”
Then I said the name that ruined her smile.
“Stay away from Mitchell.”
Mitchell’s mother, Natalie, and I had history. Old wounds. Old pride. The kind two women carry until even their children become part of the argument.
Livia looked at me with hurt in her eyes. “Can I have one night where you trust me?”
I said, “Trust isn’t the issue.”
