Principal Thomas said Livia had stepped outside during prom and no one had seen her since.
My husband John grabbed his keys, but I said the first name fear handed me.
“Where’s Mitchell?”
At the school, balloons still hung from the gym doors. Girls stood in glittering dresses. Boys held their loosened ties. The music had stopped, and every whisper sounded like an accusation.
Liam sat outside the office, pale and trembling.
“She said she needed air,” he said. “I thought she’d come back.”
“You promised me you’d stay together,” I snapped.
His face collapsed, but I did not comfort him. I was too busy building a story I could understand. Mitchell was missing too. Livia’s purse was gone. Her phone was off.
So I decided he had taken her.
