For two weeks, she came into our room after midnight, silent as smoke, and placed herself in the center of our bed. My husband, Esteban, slept on one side. I slept on the other. Lucía said it was an old fear from her village, something about not sleeping alone in a strange house.
I wanted to believe her. But neighbors whispered. My mother frowned. Even I began to feel humiliated inside my own marriage.
