The groom’s mother lowered her eyes.

She could no longer look at her son.

“I thought I was protecting your future,” she whispered.

The confession landed harder than a scream.

The bride stepped back, her hand slipping away from the groom’s arm as if she had touched something she no longer recognized.

“Protecting him?” she repeated, her voice hollow. “From what?”

The older woman’s lips trembled.

“From a mistake,” she said. “From a life that would’ve held him back.”

A stunned murmur spread through the guests.

The groom stared at his mother as something inside him began breaking apart piece by piece.

“You told me she lost the baby,” he said slowly. “You told me it didn’t survive.”
