Chapter 2: The Quiet Woman Speaks
The microphone felt heavier than it should.
Three hundred people stared as Avery faced them—calm, composed, stained.
“My name is Avery Sloan,” she began.
Silence.
“I had no intention of speaking tonight.”
Across the room, Julian Cross stood. “Avery, don’t.”
She didn’t even look at him.
“I intended to let the board handle this privately,” she continued, “because not everyone here deserves public humiliation.”
Her eyes landed on Caroline.
“But she made a different choice.”
A ripple passed through the room.
Caroline scoffed. “Oh, please.”
Avery ignored her.
“Owen,” she said.
Caroline’s husband froze.
“At 8:14 tonight, I sent you a file. Open it.”
Caroline stepped forward. “Don’t.”
Too late.
Julian moved closer. “This is inappropriate.”
Avery finally looked at him.
“What’s inappropriate,” she said, voice sharp, “is letting your mistress destroy my reputation while you funded your affair with company money.”
The gasp hit like a shockwave.
Phones rose.
Eyes widened.
Avery didn’t raise her voice.
She didn’t need to.
Because the truth had already entered the room—
And it wasn’t leaving quietly.
