CHAPTER 5: THE HUNT BEGINS
The search shifted overnight.
Not above ground.
Below it.
Tracking patterns.
Mapping tunnels.
Following what had been invisible.
The first fugitive was found in less than a day.
The second tried to hide in a drainage culvert.
The third ran.
Stole a truck.
Tried to disappear again.
He didn’t make it far.
Blocked road.
No escape.
Cuffed and breathing hard, he laughed.
“How’d you find us?”
The officer answered simply.
“A little girl heard you.”
The man shook his head.
“Four months… and a kid gets us?”
The officer didn’t hesitate.
“Maybe you shouldn’t have whispered where someone was listening.”
The man stopped laughing.
Because deep down—
he understood.
They hadn’t been caught by luck.
They had been caught by attention.
