Patricia began crying before I could speak. Two weeks before the wedding, she said, Luke had gone to a specialist. He had been tired for weeks, bruising easily, getting sick. They thought it was stress.
It was not stress.
The doctors told him he did not have much time.
Patricia said Luke believed I was still young and Miles was still little. He thought if I married him and then lost him, I would spend years trapped in grief. He thought if I hated him, I would move on.
