Chapter 6: The Truth He Carried
Dad immediately stepped between us.
“You’re not taking her anywhere,” he said firmly.
“You don’t get to decide that!”
“Will somebody please tell me what’s happening?”
Dad lowered his head briefly before looking back at me with tears gathering in his eyes.
“I never stole you,” he said quietly. “But she’s right about one thing. I’m not your biological father.”
The words hit me like ice water.
“What?”
“Liza asked me to watch you for one night,” he explained shakily. “Her boyfriend didn’t want the baby. She said she needed time to talk to him and figure things out.”
His voice cracked.
“She never came back.”
“I tried to!” Liza shouted.
The crowd had gone completely silent except for whispers spreading through the stands.
Then an older teacher stepped forward from the bleachers.
