I set up the camera to check on my baby during naptime, but what I heard shattered me first: my mother snarling, “You live off my son and still dare to say you’re tired?” Then, right beside my child’s crib, she grabbed my wife by the hair.

My name is Evan Brooks. I’m thirty-three, and I work in software sales.

Until that day, I thought I was doing my best.

My mother moved in after Lily’s surgery. She said she wanted to help, and I believed her. I told myself the tension in the house was normal.

Lily was overwhelmed.

My mother was just direct.

That was the story I kept repeating.

Then I opened the saved footage.

There wasn’t just one clip.

There were many.

My mother taking Noah from Lily whenever he cried. Mocking her feeding schedule. Leaning close and speaking softly, the way people do when they don’t want witnesses.

Then I found one video from three days earlier.

Lily sat in the chair, crying silently while Noah slept.

My mother stood in the doorway and said, almost gently:

“If you tell Evan half of what I say, I’ll tell him you’re too unstable to be left alone with this baby.”

That wasn’t help.
