Chapter 1: When the Lie Lost Control
The woman in the charcoal suit stopped beside their table with the calm of someone who did not need to raise her voice to destroy carefully built lies.
“Andrew Bennett?” she asked.
My husband looked up, irritation flashing across his face first, as if the interruption itself offended him. Then his expression changed when he noticed the badge beside her.
“Yes?”
“I’m Karen Holt, internal investigations for Halbrecht Financial. This is Officer Ruiz, and this is counsel for the company. We need you to stand up and come with us.”
Vanessa’s hand slid off his arm so quickly it looked almost violent.
Andrew gave a nervous laugh, the kind men use when they still believe charm can rescue them. “There has to be some mistake.”
Karen opened the leather portfolio in her hands. “There is no mistake. Over the last four months, company funds were used to book hotel suites, client entertainment, and travel that never involved clients. Those expenses were approved under falsified reports. We also have security footage, card records, and messages connecting both of you.”
The color drained from Andrew’s face.
All around us, forks paused halfway to mouths. Conversations faded into silence. The whole restaurant seemed to lean closer.
Vanessa stood abruptly. “I’m leaving.”
Officer Ruiz stepped into her path. “Ma’am, I’d advise you not to.”
I looked at Andrew, and for the first time since I had known him, he looked small. Not successful. Not magnetic. Not untouchable. Just small.
Then he finally saw me.
His mouth opened. “Claire—”
I lifted one hand.
“Don’t.”
That single word hit harder than any scream I could have given him.
