I stood frozen beside the kitchen counter, my hands trembling, my breath caught somewhere between fear and disbelief. My father’s words—step outside—kept echoing in my head, but my body refused to move at first.

For years, I had trained myself to stay small. To stay quiet. To survive by making myself less visible.

But there was something different in my father’s voice.

It was certainty.

So I stepped onto the back porch, the cold air brushing against my bruised skin. In the glass door, I saw my own reflection and barely recognized the woman staring back.

Dim eyes. Bent shoulders. A life slowly swallowed by silence.

Inside, a chair scraped against the floor. Derek’s voice rose, sharp and defensive, but for the first time, it did not sound powerful.

It sounded uncertain.
