PART 1: The Cake That Broke Everything
The ballroom glowed like a dream—white roses, golden lights, and a hundred smiling faces waiting for the perfect moment.
Emily stood beside her new husband, Daniel, heart still racing from the vows they had spoken just minutes earlier. This was supposed to be the beginning of forever.
“Cake time!” someone cheered.
Laughter rippled through the crowd as the towering white cake was wheeled in. Cameras lifted. Phones recorded. Music softened into something sweet and celebratory.
Daniel cut the first slice with a confident grin. Emily watched him, searching for warmth in his eyes—something steady, something reassuring.
He lifted a piece toward her lips.
She smiled, leaned in… and at the last second, playfully dabbed a bit of frosting on his cheek.
The crowd laughed.
A harmless moment. A tradition. A joke.
But Daniel didn’t laugh.
The room shifted—subtly at first.
His smile froze. His eyes hardened.
“What are you doing?” he said under his breath.
Emily blinked, caught off guard. “It’s just—”
Before she could finish—
His foot lashed out.
A sharp, violent kick.
Emily gasped as pain exploded through her abdomen, her body folding as she stumbled backward. The laughter died instantly. Silence crashed into the room like shattered glass.
“Are you insane?” Daniel snapped, wiping his cheek aggressively. “You embarrassed me!”
“Daniel—” Emily’s voice trembled, confused, hurting.
Then—
“Hey!”
Jessica, her bridesmaid and best friend, rushed forward, fury blazing in her eyes. She stepped between them, shielding Emily.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” she shouted.
Guests froze. Some stepped back. Others pulled out their phones again—but this time, not for celebration.
Daniel scoffed. “Stay out of this.”
“I won’t,” Jessica shot back. “You just kicked your wife!”
“It was a joke gone too far,” he said coldly. “She disrespected me.”
Emily tried to stand, her breath uneven, pain spreading deep through her stomach.
“Respect?” Jessica laughed bitterly. “You call that respect?”
Voices rose. Guests whispered. The perfect wedding unraveled in seconds.
Daniel stepped forward again, anger rising like a storm. “You’re making a scene.”
“No,” Jessica said sharply. “You already did.”
The tension snapped.
Shouting. Movement. Someone tried to intervene. Chairs scraped. Glass clinked.
And then Emily collapsed.
The room erupted.
“Call an ambulance!” someone screamed.
Jessica dropped to her knees beside her, panic replacing anger. “Emily—stay with me, okay? Stay with me!”
Emily’s vision blurred. The lights above her flickered into streaks of gold and white.
The last thing she saw before everything faded… was Daniel stepping back.
Not toward her.
Away.
