I had arrived early, found my desk, met my manager, and smiled through so many introductions that my cheeks hurt before noon. Everyone was polite, but polite is not the same as welcoming.
By lunchtime, my stomach had tied itself into a knot.
When I opened the break room door, laughter hit me first. People sat in groups, leaning across tables, speaking in the easy language of years spent together. I stood there holding my lunch bag like a child on her first day of school.
Every table looked full.
Every chair seemed claimed.
Then an older man in a gray uniform looked up from his sandwich near the window.
“You can sit here, if you’d like,” he said.
I almost cried from relief.
“Thank you,” I whispered. “I’m Charlotte.”
“Charles,” he said gently.
