[Video]: The Night The Pretenders Took Over Late-Night TV

Chapter 1: The Night The Pretenders Took Over Late-Night TV

In early 1981, The Pretenders appeared on the late-night sketch comedy show Fridays and delivered a performance that perfectly captured why the band felt so dangerous and exciting at the time.

This wasn’t a polished television appearance designed to play it safe.

It felt unpredictable, loud, and completely alive.

“At a time when many bands softened themselves for television, The Pretenders did the exact opposite.”

Fronted by Chrissie Hynde, the band stormed through “Message Of Love” with the same sharp confidence and swagger that made them one of the most important acts of the new wave era.

Hynde stood center stage with effortless cool, delivering every lyric with attitude that felt completely natural rather than performed.

But the real power of the set came from the band itself.

James Honeyman-Scott’s guitar work cut through everything with precision and energy, while Pete Farndon and Martin Chambers pushed the rhythm section hard enough to make the entire performance feel explosive.

Nothing about it felt controlled.

That tension became part of the magic.
