Chapter 1: The First Announcement
I wrapped my fingers around the microphone and let the cool metal steady my hand.
Behind us, the lake shimmered beneath the afternoon sun. White roses trembled softly on the wedding arch, untouched by the tension that had frozen every guest in place. Faces stared back at me from rows of white chairs—some shocked, some curious, some already understanding that this ceremony had crossed into something no one could pretend away.
Linda stood only a few feet from me, chin raised, her expression sharpened by the confidence of a woman who believed she had already won.
Ethan remained beside me, silent.
His hands were no longer reaching for mine.

“My first announcement,” I said, my voice calm enough to make the silence feel even sharper, “is that these ten condos were never up for negotiation.”

Linda’s mouth tightened.
I continued.
“They were left to me by my grandfather—a man who spent his life building something through honesty, sacrifice, and discipline. He did not leave them to me so they could become a test of my loyalty. He left them to protect me, to bless my future, and to remind me that love should never require surrendering what God has entrusted to your care.”
Linda’s face hardened, but I did not look away.
“Inheritance is not selfishness,” I said. “And greed dressed up as family unity is still greed.”
Several guests lowered their eyes. Others stared openly now, as if the mask had finally slipped and they could no longer pretend not to see it.
For the first time that day, Linda lost a little of her composure.
